All you need to know in 60 seconds ...

Centre-backs José María Giménez and Diego Godín struck in the final 13 minutes to give Atlético the advantage in this round of 16 tie.Chances were few and far between in the first half with a free-kick the closest either side came – Juventus's Cristiano Ronaldo stinging the palms of Jan Oblak early on before Atléti forward Antoine Griezmann called Wojciech Szczęsny into action.Diego Costa sliced a far more presentable opportunity wide of Szczęsny's goal in the 50th minute after being sent clear by Griezmann, who then forced the goalkeeper to tip his lob on to the bar as Diego Simeone's men got into the ascendancy. The pressure paid off late in the game when Giménez drilled in after substitute Álvaro Morata's header had been blocked, before Godín stabbed in the second following another set piece.

View from the stadium: Joseph Walker

You wouldn't have imagined this outcome at half-time, but Simeone had his tactics absolutely spot on and the Rojiblancos deserved their win. They completely nullified all of Juve's strengths and finally took one of their many chances. What a night. The Metropolitano is rocking!

Man of the match: Diego Godín

The duel between superstars Ronaldo and Griezmann stole the pre-match spotlight but this was also a head-to-head between two real masters of the art of defending, Godín and Giorgio Chiellini. Both had very good games yet the Uruguayan became the hero of the night for the Colchoneros. Not only did he direct his defence with the usual authority, limiting Ronado and Co; he also scored a potentially crucial goal for his team. A lion.

Key stats

  • Atlético have won their last nine European home matches, conceding only once in the process.

  • Atlético have not lost any of their last 13 home games in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.

  • Atlético have never lost when Giménez has scored (W6 D2).

  • Godín netted his first #UCL goal since Atlético's 5-0 win against Malmö in October 2014.

What does it mean?

Simeone has still not lost a European match against Italian opposition since becoming Atlético coach, winning five and drawing twice. Equally ominous for Juve is that the Bianconeri have been eliminated in all five UEFA ties in which they lost the first leg 2-0 away from home.

What's next?

Second in the Spanish Liga, Atlético host relegation-threatened Villarreal on Saturday. Simeone's troops then visit Real Sociedad (03/03) and welcome Leganés (09/03) before the Juventus second leg in Turin (12/03).Top of Serie A by 13 points, Juventus travel to Bologna (24/02) and closest pursuers Napoli (03/03) in their next two fixtures. The Bianconeri then entertain Udinese (08/03) prior to receiving Atlético for the second leg (12/03).
